The route
Santiago Canyon Road leaves the City of Orange near Jamboree Rd and Irvine Regional Park and runs southeast through the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, past Irvine Lake and the turnoffs for Silverado Canyon and Modjeska Canyon. It ends at Cook's Corner, the roadhouse where Santiago Canyon, El Toro and Live Oak Canyon roads meet.

How to ride it
Most riders start from the Orange end and ride out to Cook's Corner and back, or make a loop by descending El Toro Rd toward Lake Forest and returning through Irvine. Ridden out and back from the Orange end, you climb the Modjeska Grade on the return. Pace the rolling miles out; the grade comes late.
Staying safe
- Traffic. Cars and motorcycles move fast in the canyon. Ride predictably, stay right, single up on narrow sections and blind corners, and use a rear light even in daylight.
- Water and food. There are very few services between the city and Cook's Corner. Carry what you need.
- Heat. Inland canyons get much hotter than the coast. Start early in summer.
- Closures. Fire season and storms can close the canyon. Check Caltrans QuickMap and local news before you go.
Bike prep for the canyon
- Brakes. The descents are long and fast. Check pad wear, and if your hydraulic lever feels soft, get a bleed before you go.
- Tires. Look for cuts and embedded glass. Canyon shoulders collect debris.
- Gearing. If the Modjeska Grade has you grinding, a larger cassette or smaller chainrings can help. Ask us about gearing upgrades.
- Spares. Tube, levers, pump or CO2, multi-tool, phone and ID.
